February 20, 2009 Development Board Has New Director
A Lockhart native with over 30 years managerial experience will be the new director of the Union County Development Board. Andrena Powell-Baker was selected from among 50 applicants to succeed Stanley Vanderford, who is retiring after nine years on the job.

Economic development is a complex, lengthy, collaborative process involving many different people brought together through the efforts of the development board, executive director Stanley Vanderford says. After nine years as executive director of the Union County Development Board Vanderford announced this week that he is retiring. His term expires in June and Vanderford said he will not ask to be appointed to another four-year term. He said he is announcing his retirement now to give the development board time to find a successor.

The presence of the high-profile bearing manufacturer Timken Co. has been gift enough for Union County. But business leaders are hoping the company's addition of a wind turbine bearing production line at its Tyger River facility will keep the county's economic development efforts gusting.

Duncan-based Sloan Construction Co. Inc. announced Thursday its plans to invest $15 million into building a new liquid asphalt cement storage and distribution facility and create about 20 jobs in Union County.
